Fire cracker applique dish towel - Tried it out Thursday

I featured ruffled, ribbon, and appliqued dish towels on Monday for my Must Do Monday. Today I'm showing you my very first attempt at my own embellished dish towel.

I'll go ahead and say up front that this is not my best work. But still a decent practice run. I'll definitely be doing more towels in other themes. I used some red, white, and blue fat quarters I got for super cheap at Tuesday Mornings and a paper piecing pattern from 201 Paper Piecing Patterns. I got this book when I first started scrapbooking and I'm glad I've saved it because I can use the patterns for more than scrapbooking.  I used a firecracker pattern for the Fourth of July. Hubby says mine look like baby bottles, lol. I'm still determined not to call this a total failure!

Instead of sewing on the shooting stars and fireworks effects, I used fabric paint for that part. I should have traced a pattern for the stars but I didn't. I free handed them. We'll just call those stars whimsical.

Just a few other notes: The towels I used were tea towels from Target. They come in a four pack. I'm not crazy about them. The measurements of these towels are 30 in x 30 inches. I was really looking for something more oblong like the standard dish towel but I could not find any solid white ones other than these. Because of these measurements, I had to piece two strips from the fat quarter to make a ruffle and it still wasn't really long enough once I gathered the ruffle. Next time I'll  use a regular dish towel.  I'll do something with the other tea towels, but I'm not sure what just yet.

Have you done any projects lately that you just weren't happy with? Have you shared it anyway? I shared mine because I figure at least you'll know what NOT to do. Leave me a link to your "not so great" projects. I'm sure they are still inspirational to some of us.
