Easy Fancy Framed chalkboard

I resisted the chalkboard craze for a long time, partly because I didn't think I had a use for any of the projects and partly because I just hadn't gotten around to it. I have a platter that I bought at a yard sale with a chalk board project in mind but I haven't gotten to it. When I saw Suburb's Mama's chalkboard sign on her front porch, I knew it was time to get on board. I just had to copy this for my own front porch update.

I wanted a white frame and I didn't want to paint it. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it either. Luck would have it, I found a clearance frame at Michael's that was white. It was on clearance because it didn't have a glass but I decided I could work with it. There are tons of ways to make a chalkboard from a picture frame. I was initially going to paint the glass in the frame, but since this one didn't have a glass, I had to shift to plan B.

Luckily the backing board was a sturdy smooth MDF board, so I just painted the backing board. I used Michael's brand Craft chalkboard paint. Just two coats is all it takes.

I followed antsi-pants' tutorial for tranferring chalkboard lettering and art. I used chalk hand lettering font. I freehanded the heart and doodles (maybe I should have copied those too).

I'm pretty happy with my new chalkboard frame and I'm looking forward to improving my chalk art skills and changing this up for the seasons and holidays.

  6. Love your frame, I seem to have a thing for fancy detailed frames, just not the prices. Anyway your blackboard frame and all is great, love love it. Is your wording not erasable? Meant to stay as it is to look pretty? Ok now I think maybe?I've got it.
Glad you mentioned the chalk board paint from Michaels. I bought a big can at Lowes and this person can't seem to get the hang of it, took me 4 coats to get it to work. Duh! I'm a slow learner what can I say and now I'm stuck with that nasty can of chalk board paint. Live and learn I guess. Happy Summer

    1. The wording is erasable. The chalk marker I used can even be used on glass, mirrors, or ceramics. Thanks for stopping by.
